on a few simple goals

I've never been a resolution-making kind of gal. Mostly because I'm always coming up with new goals,  new dreams, new visions for the future. This past year alone I had at least three different careers that I had "finally" decided on (English teacher, bridal consultant, copy writer). Needless to say, none of them quite worked out (not yet anyway).

So every year I focus instead on smaller goals. For 2013 I've decided to break them down into simple monthly goals. I'll be sharing them here at the beginning of every month, not only to spark some thoughts, but to hold myself accountable. Here are my small, simple dreams for January.

Eat dinner at the table. With real dishes, linens, candles...the works. (Preferably real food, too, but...one thing at a time).

Is it so weird that I can count on both hands the number of times we've eaten dinner at the table since getting married? We almost always eat on the couch; not to watch TV, just because, well, it's comfy.

But I want to make dinner feel more special, more set apart, I guess, from the rest of the day. And I want an excuse to buy some pretty cloth napkins.

Host a craft/tea party. Again with the cloth napkins. Also, a way to justify the craft supplies that keep appearing in my house.

Get caught up. On projects. On cleaning and organizing. Does anyone else feel completely thrown off track after Christmas?

I'm like, "Where am I? What was I doing with my life before sewing stockings and party hopping and doing enough Christmas crafts to make Martha Stewart sweat?"

Take more pictures. As always.

What are some things you're challenging yourself to do this month? Besides finding a way to creatively get rid of all those Christmas cookies?

  1. Love these goals, Heather. I am challenging myself to be more intentional in all things and present in the "now". So easily I can dream up ideas or spend time wishing rather than actively pursuing opportunities or embracing the little things :)

    Happy New Years!!

    1. Same here! I've found that I have a much easier time committing to things when I write it all down. Love that you used the word intentional--that's my "word" for 2013 :)
Happy New Year to you too!

  2. Love it! I was feeling a little distant from my husband and when I stopped to think about it, I realized that we always ate dinner in front of the TV too. I asked him if we could start having dinner at the table with the TV and computer off and no phones. We did and it really helped our quality time. Of course, we got off track with Christmas and all, but I hope to get back on track now that things are settled back to normal.

    1. I know, it's funny how something so simple can really affect your marriage! I'm trying to get better at the whole staying off my phone and computer thing.

  4. My husband and I eat in front of the TV most of the time, too. I cooked a nice New Year's Eve dinner and we (gasp) ate it at the table. We both agreed that we should make a regular habit of it. Not only did we enjoy our meal and our conversation more, we actually (gasp) did our dishes right away! Haha... Yup. This is a good goal.

    1. Yes! My husband and I ate dinner at the table last night and we actually did the dishes afterwards! It was revolutionary.

  8. Oh man we have a lot of the same goals. We are horrendous at eating at the table, maybe done it 15-20 times in the past 3 years. That sounds terrible but we both grew up in families that didn't do it, so it still kinda feels awkward but I desperately want to create the habit before Hayden is old enough to remember it any other way.
